A Review Of The Sony PS3 Slim

The Sony PS3 Slim is Sony’s latest version of its prized games console.

The PS3 Slim is quite similar to how it was before, but the design has undergone
a transformation.

As said before, the design on the PS3 Slim has been modified from the old
version. The Slim is 33% smaller, 36% lighter and 34% less power consuming
than the old PS3.

Sony have also changed the touch-sensitive buttons to standard push-buttons, and have removed the master power switch at the back of the unit.

One of the changes in the PS3 Slim that I don’t like quite as much is the removal of
that sexy gloss that it used to boast. Now the console seems a little less desirable.
This and the transformation of the “Playstation 3″ etching to a simple “PS3″, the
Slim looks just a tad dull.

The Slim has also dropped the silver trim. Perhaps the removal of these design frills
is one of Sony’s attempts to make the Slim cheaper, having lost quite a lot of money
following a destructive lawsuit with Dualshock.

At least the two USB, HDMI, AV Multi-out, ethernet and optical out ports on the PS3
Slim are still there, as they were on the previous model. It’s a good thing that there
were no sacrifices there. The power cable has been shrunk down to being just a two-pin cable.

The Slim can still boast a BluRay drive, which will play your discs in an awesome 1080p
video quality. There is also the added feature of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD master audio
which can be bitstreamed to a receiver through HDMI.

Another problem with the PS3 Slim is its CD and DVD playback; the audio
jitter when you play both formats has increase massively. Luckily this
seems to be overshadowed with the DVD upscaling power the Slim has. You’ll
be gaping at how amazing the DVD quality is too much to notice the slight
sound defects.

This all begs the question; should I buy the PS3 Slim? At almost 250, the Slim
is well priced in Playstation standards, but in comparison to the 360 and Wii,
it may seem a little pricey. However, it’s worth to take into consideration the
fact that the Slim has a built-in BluRay player, and in many cases normal
BluRay players are actually more expensive than the Slim. If you’ve got the money
and you’re after a gaming treat, this Slim will do well for you. However, if you
already have the old PS3, there’s not really any reason why you shouldn’t just
remain on that.
