Allen Iverson Signs With Grizzlies
Although I detest Allen Iverson due to what he caused in Detroit with the franchise, damaging what was an incredibly closely knit team that was one of the best teams in the East, I have got to set my hatred for the guy aside.
By no means since I prefer to, it’s since the largest acquisition in the existence of the Memphis Grizzlies’ team took place on Wednesday. “The Answer” finally answered the question that various fans of the team have been asking.
Will he really end up in Memphis?
Through his Twitter account, Iverson, who will now be earning $3.5 million this season for the Grizzlies, finished all of the assumption and agreed in provisions to play for the Grizzlies, his 3rd team in the past four seasons.
The agreement also includes bonuses for making the post-season, one thing that has not happened since ’06 (when they lost to the Dallas Mavericks in the first round), and if they win the NBA finals.
Over the years, Iverson has had challenges grasping leadership and taking whatever responsibility that is assigned to him (example: the Pistons) and fighting with coaches (i.e.: the Sixers), which is why very few franchises had been interested in Iverson after his catastrophe in Detroit.
Now he has shot to do something similar to what he did in Philly (when he entered the league) and maneuver the fortunes of this franchise around and do it with a threesome of young talents in O.J. Mayo, Rudy Gay, and Hasheem Thabeet.
While we shouldn’t pencil the Grizzlies in for the playoffs by any means, it is not difficult to assume that they will be better from latest season.
If Iverson stays more than one year, perhaps there could be an opportunity, although I don’t suppose people should get their hopes up on the fact that the Grizzlies will make the post-season.
It’s too early.
