Guitar Music Lessons – How To Practice Guitar

If interest is the most important part of learning guitar(without it you would not have even began), then focus is the most important component of practicing guitar.

I frequently tell people that twenty minutes of concentrated practice can beat, hands down, two hours of ‘normal’ practice, or just goofing about.

Numerous people are discouraged when they are told how much time they should place into practice. The fact is, you do not have to practice all the time to be a great guitarist.

(I am not saying you should not have time to goof off and play around. But in case you wish to enhance rapidly, you must continue playing guitar and practicing guitar separate.)

Let me tell you now…

It is not how much time you place into practice, it’s the quality of the practice that matters.

When I play guitar, I play to enjoy, I play to perform for men and women, and I play for the enjoyment of playing! That’s why I started learning guitar in the first place.

But when I practice guitar, I focus and concentrate on what I’m attempting to accomplish, and I work on the goals that I wish to complete.

As you can see, if you completely concentrate on one thing, you are much more likely to do it properly.

This might seem simple too to some. Some of you might be thinking “this is great, I only need to practice twenty minutes a day and I will improve more than I would if I practice for 2 hours every day”.

Well that’s not precisely true.

It’s how focused your practice is that matters, not how long you practice. Can you truly concentrate for 2 hours?

Let me provide you with this small example to illustrate my point.

Picture a red triangle inside a black box.

Close your eyes, and keep that image in your mind for five seconds without allowing a single thing draw attention away from you – no other thought must get into your mind for that 5 seconds…

How well did you do? Be honest with yourself.

This isn’t an easy thing to do. Most people find this difficult at first. It is difficult to maintain a concentrated mind such as this.

I hope this example has demonstrated you that it is not that easy to maintain focused attention & concentration for look periods of time.

But still, you have to always keep in mind that it’s quality and not quantity of practice that creates the difference between a great player and an average player.
