Improve Your Hebrew with Online Videos
Learning Hebrew online is now easy with free videos. Many teachers now create interesting videos, and upload to the websites such as YouTube. This article will discuss a few types of videos that are now available.
Some videos teach the alphabet. You can hear Debbie Friedman’s alef-bet song with a video of the related letters. This is a “must-see” video, and you will find yourself singing along with the Hebrew alef-bet.
The videos are a mix of commercial demos and videos developed by volunteers. HebrewResources.com has uploaded several lessons from “At Home with Hebrew” and their new “Hebrew Kindergarten” product. Some of the Ulpan schools in Israel have uploaded samples of their students applying what they have learned.
There are several types of videos where the words are displayed on the screen, and someone reads the words. An author known as “bnaiorpueblo” has posted several of these using verses from the Hebrew scriptures.
Listening to Hebrew songs is yet another great way to improve your Hebrew language skills. Songs are catchy, and the melodies make it easier to learn Hebrew vocabulary. On the videos, you hear a mix of songs and liturgy.
One of the craziest videos is a set of lessons taught by “Vampire Bear”. It’s kind of like Sesame Street, and I’m sure children would have fun with these videos. But for adults, I recommend the other videos.
Those interested in learning prayers and liturgy will also be happy with what is available online. There are numerous renditions of the “Shema” (Hear O Israel) and the V’Ahavta. The candle-lighting prayers for the Erev Shabbat on Friday night are also online.
Other videos simply teach basic vocabulary. They are usually organized by topcis, such as “parts of the body”, “computer terms”, or “shopping” terms. You can always rewind or play the video again until you have mastered the words on these videos.
In summary, Hebrew videos have something for all levels and types of learners. The combination of seeing and hearings is a real advantage. And best of all, the videos are all free.
