Is Learning The Piano Right For Me? Part 3

In the last article we looked at how physical space can influence whether a piano is the right instrument thing for you. This time we will be taking a look at how other folks and yourself can affect your call to take up the piano.

To work this out, you need to ask yourself:

Do You Have The Resources?

If you were to buy a piano this week, what resources have you got available to help you learn?

Will you learn from an instructional book or would you benefit more from piano learning software? How would you get help if you got stuck?

Perhaps a teacher is more your style? They will be available each week and will be able to help with any questions or issues you might have. But don’t forget : teachers cost money. So keep that under consideration.

Will You Have Privacy?

Privacy is something that very few people really consider when considering learning an instrument. This is especially important if you are going to learn piano.

If you dog or cat wants attention, somebody wants to chat, wants to utilise the room or is making a nuisance of themselves, it can be quite detrimental to your practice. And we haven’t even covered outside interruptions like chainsaws, window washing or vacuuming.

It is not like you can just pick up a piano and move it to somewhere quiet – unless you are using a keyboard or digital piano.

You have got to make sure that it’s possible to get privacy and not be interrupted when practicing.

Are You Motivated?

This is the final thing you have got to consider. While its easy to get all excited and say ‘yes, I’m motivated ‘, you should really dig deep and think about every part of practice.

Everyone loves the concept of having the ability to play pretty sonatas or a cheerful tune but you also have to think about the hours of practice, making mistakes, going over the same bits of music – essentially all of the down sides that come with piano practice as well.

If you actually think hard and take it all into consideration and still come back with a ‘yes ‘ then you will be off to a good start.

This wraps up all the questions that you ought to be taking into consideration when making your choice to learn piano or not, and remember “where there’s a will, there’s a way”.
