Model Train Maintenance of Diesel Locomotives

Model train sets today arrive at you door ready to run. In no way does this imply completely dismissing pre operations testing.

Removing your model trains chassis is done with ease. Simply spread casting lugs by gripping chassis and spreading gently until casting is released.

While casting is removed it is the perfect time for you to inspect for strange noises, fouled gears and strange stutters. Be on the lookout for truck adjustments. If you spot your locomotive sitting oddly on its tracks, your trucks may need resetting.

Cleaning your trains wheels is step one in your plan of attack. Clean wheels lesson the dirt being transferred into you motor and chassis. To perform wheel cleaning hook test leads to motor, start engine, flip upside down, with your free hand place wheel cleaning block onto wheels and grind until sharp shine!

Mechanical Checks Are Always Wise Following Wheel Cleanings

After your locomotives wheels are clean take apart their gearbox and inspect for plastic shavings and also take this opportunity to clean the inside of your gearbox. Once clean and dry, apply lubricant as needed. Be carefully not to apply access amounts as this can lead to the very problems you where attempting to avoid.

While you have your truck assembly detached it’s a grand time to clean electrical surfaces within the truck. These surfaces guide currents and their information directly to your decoder.

Finally, once tune up is complete, test your locomotive safely and enjoy the freedom and relaxation of your model train set.

Upon testing you locomotive, if by chance you have troubles simply disassemble familiar parts and re check components for functionality. By your earlier cleaning and adjusting of trucks and possible cleaning of gears you may have reassembled something improperly or you may be experiencing a rare case of faulty electronics in your ready to run model train set. By giving your engine the second once over you should quickly identify the culprit and cuff him before he releases any more Gremlins.
