Pit Bull Terrier: A Must-have Pet

Origins of pit bulls can be traced from the bulldogs and terriers in England way back during the Elizabethan period. As compared to other breeds such as the English Spaniel Springer and the Australian Cattle dog, the pit bulls origin is definite. However, with the rampant gambling occurring in England during that time, pit bulls were used by gamblers for dog fighting activities.

The popularity of dog fighting events has also made the pit bull gain media popularity since they are always associated with each other. This reality has made the animal lovers more specifically the dog lovers become upset. But with the efforts made by the owners and breeders to stop such inhuman treatment with the pit bulls, bad publicity has declined.

There are three known types of pit bull: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the Amstaff or American Staffordshire terrier and the popular American Pit bull Terrier or APBT. These breed type belongs to the Molosser family. Cross bred offspring of the pit bull with other breed type is usually not named as pit bull.

The incomparable loyalty that pit bulls show to their owner makes them more preferred by many people. Owners claim that this breed are generally great pets since they are friendly and have better temperament as compared to other dogs. Pit bulls innate smartness has made them more loving and protective to whoever owns them

The best time to own a pit bull pet is when it is still a puppy. Older pit bull dogs are quite hard to train and control their temperament. Puppies are generally easy to train for tricks and certain tasks and are tolerant to wherever they live till growing up into adults.

Warmer climate areas are the best places for rearing pit bull terriers. They have short coats so they could not survive cold environment. The most common body size of this breed type is 55 pounds but it generally ranges from 25 to 105 pounds weight.

Despite the breeds sturdiness, strength and great overall health conditions, they are still prone to illnesses. Diseases such as hip dysplasia, hereditary cardiac disease, and cataract may also inflict the dog. Through health clearances and regular health check up, those diseases can be prevented or be cured in earliest possible time.

Pit bulls are the most famous breed in the historical landscape, especially during World War 1. Life Magazine featured a pit bull as the cover for the first time”the only dog to have chosen as the mag cover. This was due to the infamous pit bull terrier mascot named Sergeant Stubby who was able to gain countless medals of recognition for war achievements.
