Should You Learn Guitar By Tablature?

People who play non-stringed instruments may not be familiar with one way to learn guitar chords and other notes that is particular to guitar and other stringed instruments. This method uses what is called tablature, one of the methods of putting a song down on paper. However, despite a similar appearance, this is not the same as the better known musical format that uses a standard musical staff. Tablature is a relatively quick way to learn how to play guitar, but it also has some drawbacks as well.

The tablature method does not show a player the actual notes they are playing, but helps them to learn by presenting a pictorial version of the guitar strings themselves. A small circle appears on a string where a finger is to be pressed, with a number inside the circle showing which fret is to be used.

On chords, sometimes the root note of the chord, such as “E” or “A,” will be listed beneath the diagram. By learning acoustic guitar tabs, the person often learns to play much more quickly than by other methods.

If someone is to learn how to play guitar using standard staff notation, on the other hand, it works quite differently. The notes, rather than the fingerings, are represented on the staff. So the player needs to learn, for example, where that low “C” note is played on the strings, so that any time it appears on the staff, they can press the right string and fret. They learn to play by reading the music, rather than by reading finger position.

There are both advantages and disadvantages if someone is going to learn how to play guitar by the tablature method. They just see the basic guitar string and fret, but have no indication how long or short, or fast or slow, the actual note should be. With the staff method, the player sees that clearly. They also learn where the “C” and other notes are, at several places all the way up the strings, so they can play higher up, even while reading the same piece of music. Yet in either case, they become more tied to a sheet of music and less likely to learn by ear. As someone begins learning, they need to weigh the pros and cons, and choose the method that will be best for them in the long run.

A properly tuned guitar is essential and the best way to get that is with a guitar tuner. Click here to read guitar tuner reviews on the most popular brands and models, like the Rocktron X-Tune tuner, and compare how well they perform.
