The Houston Texans play strong

The Houston Texans are excited about the 15th pick in the draft for the 2009 season. They played a good game, last year, and are working strengthening their weaknesses, some of which were noted in the 2008 season. The addition of a good defensive player would put the team in a good position for a good winning record this year.

Texan management has not stated that they will be picking a defensive player, from the draft, but there are many reasons why people believe this will be their choice. One thought is that the Texans will pick a linebacker as their draft pick. This speed and penetration just might give them the edge they need to get them to the Super Bowl this year.

The Texans are one of the newer additions to the NFL. It was not until 1999 that Houston was granted ownership of an NFL franchise. Only then did construction begin on a stadium for the new football team, yet they still were not expected to play their first game until 2002. Deadlines were met – fortunately – and the Houston Texans opened their first season in 2002 in the first stadium with a retractable roof!

Their best year, since 2002, came only five years later in 2007. The ended the 2007 season with an 8-8 record, giving them a .500 for the year, yet they had the worst record in their division. They have their work cut out for them, as they will have to achieve records higher than Tennessee, Jacksonville, and Indiana if they want any division records.

Regardless of division placement, Texan fans continue to show up to every home game. The Texans are a new team, and are beginning to show signs of playing like a veteran team; fans anxiously await the day this comes true. Even with the disappointing division placement, 2007 financials show that record ticket sales took place this year, giving the team the financial support they need.

The 2008 season was a bit better, they played as a team rather than individuals, even though they still ended the season with a .500. Players like Jacoby Jones and Andre Johnson broke records and captured the attention of thousands. Jones received numerous AFC (Player of the Week) recognitions, throughout the year, and was the first team member to do so.

The Texans’ .500 record put them in third place in their division, to be topped by Tennessee and Indianapolis. The record itself is a decent record, after all, the San Diego Chargers made it to the Super Bowl with a .500. It just so happens that other Southern division teams are playing exceptionally well.

The Houston Texans have already proven to be a strong team full of skilled players; it is just a matter of pulling it all together, and tying up some loose ends. After draft picks, these loose ends may not exist, leading the team into an exceptional season in 2009. Fans have been anxiously awaiting the approach of the new season, ever since the 2008 season ended. There is no doubt season tickets will be gone in a heartbeat!
