Two Way Radios: Can They Travel That Far?

People might have a lot of questions regarding two way radios. One of the questions that might come from them is: “How far can these radios reach?” or “Can I get good benefits from these types of communication gadgets?” Well, those are actually common questions. But when one is planning to purchase a radio for himself, he should understand the following aspects that actually affect the range of performance of these radios: transmit power, antenna, location, and user height above ground.

All of the above-mentioned factors greatly affect the ability of two way radios. In this article, we are going to discuss the simplex and portable 2-way radio systems. This is in comparison with the use of these radios in an area that is flat and is free from any obstruction.

A general guide has been formulated so that one can properly install and use a portable radio. Let’s say for example: you want to put up a radio on a flat ground that is also free from any obstruction and that you want your radio to cover a one mile range; this means that you need to apply 1 Watt transmit power. Adding another Watt will increase the radio range by one-third or is equivalent to 1.3 miles, and so on.

Like the example given above, the relationship between transmission power and radio range is not as powerful as we might expect. There is actually a need to multiply the transmit power four times to gain the right radio range. This is especially true in the United Kingdom where portable two way radios are generally restricted to five Watts.

Even there is a restriction in UK when it comes to the use of radios, radios that are installed in mobile cars perform better as they are limited to have a 25-Watt transmit power. Thus, users are ensured to reach as far as 3 to 4 miles. This is the simplex system wherein one person can talk directly from one mobile radio to another.

So there you have learned the easy way to increase the range of your radios. It’s as simple as increasing the transmit power to help your two way radios obtain wider range.
