Washington Redskins are out for another championship title in 2009!
Every season the Washington Redskins can count on the stand being full at every home game and 2009 will be no different. The Redskins are one of those teams that fans adore, partially because of where they are based, but also because they play an amazing game. Over the years the Redskins have accomplished many feats, and fans anticipate this continue to happen as the years go by.
The team originated in Boston as the Boston Braves and began playing – in the NFL – in 1932. Their first year, on the field, was a bit of embarrassment. A few years later, in 1936, things started to look up for the team, but not quite enough to make any financial profits. The city could no longer validate the support of the team, and in 1937, the team moved to Washington.
The Washington Redskins have played in numerous championship games, and have brought home five NFL championship titles. They began winning championships back in 1937, when they won their first NFL championship, followed by another NFL championship in 1942. In 1982, they won their first Super Bowl championship, only to win again in 1987 and 1991.
The Washington Redskins hold – proudly – five Conference Championship titles, 12-Division Championship titles, and have appeared in the playoffs more than twenty times. These titles and accomplishments have occurred over their entire career, beginning in 1936, and their most recent in 1999. There is no doubt that these records are part of what hold the team together.
The early years, of their career, while still in Boston, was not bright, but immediately made a change for the better with their move to Washington. Their success today, and their fans, is due – in part – to their early success. The Redskins, while suffering a twenty-year slump, have proven to be an All-American team, and they will continue to do so as the years go by.
The Redskins, during this time, had finally accepted integration (they were the last team, in pro football, to do so) when they drafted Ernie Davis (the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy). Davis was later traded for wide receiver Bobby Mitchell, who later became a member of the Hall of Fame. Many other African-American players were welcomed to the team, after they embraced integration, players like Charley Taylor, Sonny Jurgensen, Sam Huff, and Brig Owens – all of which are well known throughout sports history, and part of what made the Redskins great.
The Redskins franchise is worth 1.5-billion dollars – today – and ranks as the second most valued team in the entire NFL. They have the highest gross revenue, in the NFL, averaging $300 million each year. Much of this is due to the fact that they break attendance records on a regular basis, 7-years in a row has been their most amazing feat! The Redskins are – financially – one of the most valued teams around, but rated by fans, they are number one.
There is no doubt that the 2009 season will be a sell-out, just like every other Redskins season. With the draft nearly over, everyone is talking about who is being picked, traded, and what records the team will break and make this year. With a slowdown in titles, in the past few years, you can count on the Redskins making some noise this year and getting their titles back.
