Where’ve You Been? by Kathy Mattea is first. I heard that when I was about 10, and I was a geeky little nerd kid who had been too affected by fairy tales already. That song hit me on some weird, deep level, and I decided that day that I wanted a love like that, a woman who cared about me that deeply. (I found it, too, by the way.)

Mr. Tanner by Harry Chapin was another one. It is all about the damage of having an idea built up too much and then shattered, about putting too much out there and having people all but destroy the thing you love. It is a simple, clean, good story song with a powerful emotion to it (of course, I’d say that about just about EVERY song on Harry Chapin’s live album). I think this is, coincidentally, an interesting juxtaposition to the song you mention. If you haven’t heard it, check it out.
(This is a little rough, but you get the idea: )
