What DJ equipment do you need to start a career?

Dreams of becoming a celebrity DJ have probably figured fairly highly on many a teen-aged music-lover’s list of future careers at some point. Think of the international travel, inflated salary and international renown and you have probably found the reasons why. There are other options for a budding DJ, although whichever route is taken, it can’t be done without the right DJ equipment.

Weddings, birthdays and local pubs need mobile DJs to provide music and keep guests entertained at private events. They have to cater for a diverse audience, meaning different ages and differing tastes. Music needs to please the maximum number of people, and so has to span various genres and be commercially successful.

Getting people up and dancing is the primary goal, and a mobile DJ needs to make sure people are enjoying the music chosen. If people are at a wedding rather than a gig, they tend to enjoy other kinds of entertainment too, so some mobile DJs invest in their DJ equipment and buy VDJs and karaoke machines.

An advantage of choosing club DJ-ing over being a mobile DJ is that they don’t always need to travel with their DJ equipment. Venues often have equipment permanently installed in the DJ booth.

On the hand, club DJs need more highly developed technical skills than mobile DJs. Beatmatching, scratching and mixing are considered to be the basic, essential skills necessary for a career. If a DJ becomes a club resident they will need to build a reputation in order to attract the public. A club DJ relying on bookings from clubs around the world needs to create a demand for their performances through skill and choice of music.

Mobile and club DJs are completely different, and both require completely different DJ equipment and skills. Becoming a club DJ can seem like a much more attractive option, yet competition is stiff and many years of practice are essential for success.
