What If Tomorrow Never Comes?
Will I Have Done My Very Best?
Authored by Jimmie Burroughs
I ran across an old Garth Brooks ‘ love song, “If tomorrow never comes” and it inspired me to pen a particularly private article about myself and Bunny, my late pretty wife. It’s a question from the lyrics that caught my attention, “Did I try in each way to show her every day that she is my only one.”
Nearly 7 long years have been and gone since Bunny, the love of my life, passed away. The memory causes tears to stream down my face as I write this and I am able to barely see to type the words. I speculate now that my time on earth with her is forever gone, what could have been if I had told her all those many times, that I could have but didn’t, how much I loved her. Oh yes we had a good life together, but there might have been so much more.
In our rush through life, we frequently overlook or neglect those things which matter the most, like love and expressing it often to those we really care for. Rita Collage expounded, “Love is the single thing we bring into this world, the only thing we take with us and the only thing we leave behind.”
I know now that love is the most significant thing in the world, but I also know how simple it is to overlook and how frequently it is neglected. The Bible places a great focus on love and even describes God as love. Jesus said in, Matthew 22:37-40 , that love is the best commandment, “Love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all of your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second’s like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself. ‘ All the Law and the Foreseers hang on these 2 commandments.” The Bible also asserts, “Husbands love your wives even as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it.” (Ephesians 5:25)
So I’m just wondering today, if I had done my absolute best, what a difference it might have made for Bunny. Yes I know we will not change “what might have been” but we will be able to change what is. The idea of it today makes me need to do my absolute best; sadly , it is too late for the one individual I loved more than anything in the world, anyhow now I have made a promise with myself to express my love to others before it’s too late, “if tomorrow never comes”.
What about you? Do you have that second chance? Is there someone that you love that must be told how much you love them? Do it now because tomorrow might be too late or “If Tomorrow Never Comes!”
“So tell that one you love
what you’re thinking about
if tomorrow never comes “.
