Classical, jazz, folk (especially English, Irish and New England traditional dance tunes). Of course Ian Anderson does some wonderful things with the flute in the context of rock music with Jethro Tull.
Personally, I think that the flute can be very expressive and an absolutely wonderful instrument for any type of music.
Classical music: The flute fits the mood of many a piece of classical music. Sonatas and Concertos are beautiful, solo-like classical pieces. You’ll recognize names such as Mozart, Beethoven and Corelli as classical composers.
Baroque music: This is a type of classical music, also very fitted to the flute, that was popular in the 1600s to 1750. Baroque music will be associated with composers like Handel and Bach.
Pop music: Modern music is not an element of the flute, but it can be done. Flutes can make many different types of noises other than the normal, clear pitch. Blowing into your flute in a certain way can create percussion sounds. Singing/humming while playing creates the general sound of a guitar playing. I’ve played pop songs before….challenging and not really suited for the flute, but interesting and fun!
Romance: Romantic music is beautiful on flutes. Pick this if you want something that is soothing and has many trills in it, which is another thing about the flute – it was pretty much made to trill. These ornaments decorate every song in their own way, and make plain half, whole or eighth notes even more interesting. Romance music has many trills in it.
Jazz: Flutes aren’t a particularly jazzy instrument, but of course jazz bands usually possess a few flute players. who can actually give nice and unique jazzy solos, and contribute to the ensemble just as much as a sax would.
These are just a few genres that I liked experimenting with…and all of them are suited to the flute. If you want just one, I would have to say either Classical/Baroque, or Romance.
Hope I helped!
